Sunday Nov 03, 2024

A short end of season wrap up expressing gratitude to all guests and listeners of season one and some information regarding current plans for season two of the show.

In this episode I reconnected with my dear old friend and Rochester area resident, Eric Manzler,  a long time musician in the Finger Lakes Region.
We took some time to chat about how his approach to writing and performing has changed over the years and what that looks like for both of us now that we’re in our 50’s.
He also reflected on how living with Multiple Sclerosis and Spinal Stenosis has impacted his life, the techniques he’s learned for maintaining equanimity while facing these challenges, and how sobriety and buddhism have been key in maintaining balance.

In this episode I met with Town of Ulysses resident, Bart Gragg, founder of Blue Collar University and the author of “They’re Manager’s, Now What?" We discussed his personal experiences in the work force, what led him to establish Blue Collar U, and how that has shaped his approach and methods for creating safer work place conditions. Through podcasts, speaking engagements, and on site assessments, Bart strives to help improve employee relations and to skillfully empower workers to effectively step into managerial roles to create a workplace culture of positivity, trust, and credibility.

In this episode I met with Trumansburg local, Colleen Dunn, who took up acting and fell in love with theater performance later in life. We had a delightful conversation in which she reveals what brought her to acting, how she prepares for roles, and the challenges that she faces each time she goes on stage. Colleen is a truly inspirational presence and I hope that you take away some of that energy as you listen to this episode.

In this episode I had the great fortune to meet with Mikel “Mama” George, who owned and operated Area Records & Music in Geneva NY for 40 years before his well deserved retirement in 2017. I was thrilled that Mama was able to meet with me to discuss the history of the store, to catch up on what he’s been doing in his retirement, and to allow this episode to serve as a bit of a nostalgia piece for one of the most iconic music stores in the history of the Finger Lakes region.

In this episode I reconnect with my old and dear friend Mike Fantauzzo who resides in Geneseo and is a long time history and psychology teacher at Rush Henrietta in Rochester NY. Mike and I met in the summer of 1993 and became fast friends during our orientation weekend at SUNY Geneseo. Our conversation revolves around our mutual love of music and the challenges that he faced after a life altering injury in the summer of ’94 which left him physically disabled and how that changed his approach to playing guitar.

In this episode I sat down with fellow Trumansburg resident, John Gurche, to discuss his work with paleoart and hominin recreation. John’s works have been featured in the Smithsonian Institute , National Geographic, and were integral to bringing dinosaurs to life in the first installment of the Jurassic Park film series. I’m deeply grateful for all of the information John provided over the course of our conversation and I have no doubt that you’ll find this episode as entertaining, insightful, and educational as I did.

In this episode I met with my next door neighbor of 20 years and long time resident of the Finger Lakes, Ed Dawson. I have a tremendous amount of admiration for Ed as he’s one of the most intrinsically motivated human beings I have ever known and is a true inspiration when it comes to taking up a creative endeavor and really honing one’s craft. We chatted about how he developed an interest in working with stone and how it led to the creation of ornate walls around the property where he and his wife Jean reside. He’s also a skilled wood worker whose amazing bowls and pens can be found at local craft fairs.

In this episode I met with local Ithacan, Darrell Harrington, who, during the pandemic, created one bright red heart shaped sign with the words “Be Kind” painted on it and placed it in his front yard. He did this as means to bring joy into people’s hearts and minds during troubled times, but little did he know that this simple expression of kindness was going to spread through central NY, into other states across the US, and eventually over seas into multiple countries. Darrell is the kind of person whose expression of good will and kindness is felt as soon as he walks into a room and you can’t help but smile after talking to him for just a few minutes.
